The first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation was made by President George Washington in the year 1789. Around 90 Wampanoag Indians and the Wampanoag chief, Massasoit, attended the festival. The Pilgrim leader at the time was Governor William Bradford, and it was he who organized the original Thanksgiving.
